Domaine de Frégate
The imposing Domaine de Frégate sits squarely between Saint-Cyr-sur-Mer and Bandol atop of calcium-rich soils overlooking the sparkling Mediterranean below.
Like many in the Bandol AOC the vineyard as it is today, dates back to the early 1970s and half of the wines are rosé.
It's an impressive site with a winding drive from the main road through the vines and hosts luxurious hotel facilities and greens.
We hear that Domaine de Frégate is one destination for the rich and famous in this westerly corner of Cote d'Azur and even Formula One crews stay here when in town. We suppose the helipad is at a safe distance from the grapes!
Somehow the signs for spa treatments and sight of the driving range makes the elegant estate feel more like a golf resort with wine-making squeezed into it rather than the more understated Bandol type of winery we have become used to.
But the reception we received was polite (if not warm) and the tasting was interesting and all our questions were answered. We did feel a touch embarrassed, however, as to our tiny purchase and got the distinct impression that the usual order would be for cases for the number we asked for in bottles.
Tried and tasted the Domaine de Frégate 2017 Bandol AOC rosé that retails at €13 /bottle.
