Domaine et Château Pey Neuf
For some reason Pay Neuf seemed to have a tourist-shop feel to it. It wasn’t the entrance - the parking area was well set out and each bay had its own olive tree shading the spot and overlooking the vines. The steps down to the estate were well presented (with the exception of a kitch concrete horse) and the welcome from our hostess was very pleasant. But inside, the array of items for sale was vast. Bottles and boxes of wine, of course, but also soaps, fruit & veg, oils, gimmicky wine holders – plenty of tat – it was as though they were expecting bus tours. Maybe they were.
Domaine et Château Pey Neuf dates back to 1802 and is one of the more widely known rosés in the area to be find on many a carte-a-vin. The rosé we tried was crisp and easy but we found it lacking the depth of wine from other, nearby estates.
The pour was lingering - and not necessarily in a good way. We purchased a bottle for a second shot and were somewhat surprised to find it had a PLASTIC CORK.
Tried, tasted and purchased the 2017 Pey Neuf Bandol Rosé at €10.95/bottle.
Destination, drop-in or drive-by? – Put it on the tour if you have the time (especially if you want some lavender soap).
